About Democaster

Democaster is an easier to use, low cost, open-source-oriented webcasting system for community groups and small government organisations. It is designed for public meetings, events, and conferences of a strictly non-commercial nature.

This pilot initiative, supported by the UK Local e-Democracy National Project, is designed with the following goals:

1. Make webcasting accessible to potential "producers" in community groups and government
2. Focusing on lower cost "enhanced" audio with an webcam image option instead of expensive, bandwidth intensive audio
3. Provide a simple platform for webcast "users" to listen to webcasts live and on-demand via streaming, download, or podcast
4. Use open source/free software tools, and non-proprietary audio to the greatest extent possible
5. Create a production system that automaticaly archives scheduled live webcasts and uploaded audio along with producer input agenda items and links

In short, Democaster makes small scale webcasting so inexpensive and relatively easy that it is viable for community groups and small government organisations.
